It's Not Cold and Flu Season... It's Sugar Season

Everyone talks about cold and flu season like it's inevitable. Like the weather gets cooler and suddenly everyone just starts getting sick because that's what happens in fall and winter.

But let's talk about what's actually happening. It's not the weather making people sick. It's what people are doing during this time of year.

Starting in October and running through January, we have a constant parade of sugar-heavy holidays. Halloween candy. Thanksgiving overeating. Christmas cookies and parties. New Year's celebrations. And that's not even counting all the random fall festivals, school parties, and weekend gatherings where sugar is everywhere.

During this time, people (especially kids) are consuming massive amounts of sugar, eating more processed food, moving less because it's colder outside, staying indoors more, sleeping less, and dealing with more stress.

And then they get sick and blame it on "cold and flu season."

No. You're sick because you destroyed your immune system with sugar and stress.

What Sugar Does to Your Immune System

Sugar suppresses immune function. This isn't controversial or debatable. It's well-documented science.

When you consume sugar, it temporarily impairs the ability of white blood cells to fight off bacteria and viruses. This effect can last for several hours after eating sugar. So if you're constantly consuming sugar throughout the day (which most people are during the holidays), your immune system is constantly suppressed.

Sugar also feeds bad bacteria and yeast in your gut. And since about 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, when your gut health is compromised, your immune function is compromised.

Add in the fact that sugar causes inflammation throughout the body, disrupts sleep, spikes and crashes blood sugar levels (which creates stress on the body), and you have a recipe for getting sick.

It's not the cold weather. It's the sugar.

The Halloween Effect

Every single year, we see this pattern. Kids go trick-or-treating on Halloween. They come home with bags full of candy. And for the next week (or month, depending on how parents handle it), they're eating candy constantly.

And then a week or two after Halloween, those same kids are sick. Runny nose. Cough. Fever. Parents say "oh, they caught something going around."

No. They didn't catch something. They ate so much sugar that their immune system couldn't function properly, and their body couldn't fight off the normal germs they're exposed to every day.

The same thing happens after every sugar-heavy holiday. Thanksgiving weekend, everyone's sick. Week after Christmas, everyone's sick. It's not a coincidence.

It's Not Just Kids

Adults do this too. We just blame different things.

You go to holiday parties. You eat cookies and drink alcohol. You stay up late. You're stressed about family gatherings and year-end work deadlines. You're not exercising as much because it's cold and dark outside. And then you get sick and say "something's going around the office."

Maybe something is going around the office. But the reason YOU got sick is because your immune system was compromised from sugar, alcohol, stress, and lack of sleep.

People with strong, healthy immune systems don't get sick every time they're exposed to germs. Their bodies fight off infections before symptoms even start. But when your immune system is suppressed from sugar and stress, you can't fight off anything.

What You Can Do About It

First, be aware of how much sugar you and your kids are actually consuming during this time of year. It adds up fast. Candy at school. Treats at activities. Desserts at gatherings. Halloween candy. It's constant.

Second, set boundaries around sugar. You don't have to let your kids eat unlimited Halloween candy for a month. You don't have to eat cookies at every holiday party. You can participate in holiday celebrations without destroying your immune system.

Third, support your immune system proactively. Make sure your nervous system is functioning optimally (because your nervous system controls your immune system). Get enough sleep. Move your body even when it's cold outside. Manage stress. Eat real food, not just processed holiday treats.

Fourth, don't use "it's the holidays" as an excuse to completely abandon healthy habits. Yes, enjoy treats and celebrations. But don't spend two months straight eating sugar, drinking alcohol, skipping exercise, and staying up late, and then act surprised when you get sick.

Your Nervous System Controls Your Immune System

This is where chiropractic care comes in. Your nervous system controls and coordinates every function in your body, including your immune system. When your spine is misaligned and your nervous system has interference, your immune system can't function optimally.

Regular adjustments help maintain proper nervous system function, which supports immune function. When your nervous system is working well, your body can fight off infections more effectively.

This doesn't mean you'll never get sick. But it means your body has a better chance of staying healthy even when you're exposed to germs.

Prepare Now

We're heading into the season of sugar, stress, and sickness. But it doesn't have to be inevitable. You can prepare your body now. Get adjusted. Clean up your diet before the holidays hit. Set boundaries around sugar. Support your immune system proactively.

Don't wait until you're sick to start thinking about your health. Be proactive. Your body will thank you.
